Diogo Dalot added a second in the 45th minute to make it 2-0 on the night and 4-2 on aggregate. However, just like we’ve seen all season with Manchester United, the club lost a two-goal lead in six minutes, with Corentin Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico scoring in the 71st and 77th minutes to put Lyon back into the game.
Tolisso was sent off for a second bookable offense in the 89th minute, but that didn’t stop Lyon from scoring two goals in extra time to establish a 4-2 lead over United.
With the game seemingly over, a penalty in the 114th minute by Bruno Fernandes gave United a lifeline, making the Red Devils push for a late equalizer, which came through Kobbie Mainoo in the 120th minute. With everyone looking to settle for a penalty shootout to decide the game, Harry Maguire rose above everyone in Lyon’s penalty area to head home the winner in the 121st minute, giving United one of the most resounding comebacks in their rich history.
If the Red Devils go on to win the Europa League at the end of the season, they’ll cite that moment as the turning point in their season.
