The atmosphere in Dortmund was fenomenal, only a bit dampened by Leverkusen winning 3-2. We had seats in the middle of dortmundfans, so we too had hide our joy over Leverkusen's victory.”

They kept their shape and secured a big win to reach the quarter-finals, where they faced Minerven.
The Forts secured a 2-0 aggregate win to reach the semi-finals to face off with Colombian side Atletico Junior. The Colombian team secured a 2-1 win at home in the first leg, leaving Velez with a mountain to climb in the reverse fixture, and boy, did they deliver! They beat Junior 2-1 to level the tie, taking the game into extra time, and then penalties, where they secured a 5-4 victory.
In the final, they faced Sao Paulo, who were defending champions and favorites to win again. First leg in Buenos Aires, Velez won 1–0 with a penalty scored by Roberto Trotta. The second leg in Brazil was a different story. Sao Paulo came back into it, and the game went to penalties after a 1–1 draw on aggregate. That shootout still gets talked about. Chilavert made a key save, and Velez held their nerve. They won it and became champions of South America for the first time.
That alone would have been enough to make the year memorable, but it didn’t stop there. As Libertadores winners, Velez got to face AC Milan in the Intercontinental Cup in Tokyo. It was one of those matches where nobody really expected the Argentine side to come out on top. Milan had stars. They had history. But none of that mattered once the match started.
Velez played smart. They absorbed the pressure and waited for their chances. Omar Asad scored one, and Trotta added another. Just like that, Milan were beaten. Velez was the world champion. A team that most people hadn’t seen coming had just taken down one of the biggest clubs in Europe.
Later, Velez added the Copa Interamericana by beating Cartagines from Costa Rica. That title didn’t get as much attention, but it completed the trio and wrapped up a year that stands alone in the club’s history.
