About the Belgium national team
A rich football history
The Belgium national football team, also known as the Red Devils, has a rich history dating back to 1904. Belgium was one of the founding members of FIFA and played its first international match against France on May 1, 1904, which ended in a 3-3 draw.
In 1920, Belgium was praised by international media as the ‘first world champion of football’ after winning a tournament featuring teams such as the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden. This groundbreaking success marked the beginning of a football tradition in the country.
The Red Devils achieved their greatest results at the World Cups of 1986 and 2018, where they reached the semi-finals and secured third place respectively. At the European Championship in 1980, they finished as runners-up after losing the final to West Germany.

Football icons
Over the years, Belgium has produced many talented footballers who achieved iconic status:
Paul Van Himst: Striker who became the all-time top scorer for the Red Devils with 30 goals.
Eric Gerets: Defender with over 100 caps who later became national team coach.
Jan Ceulemans: The ‘Snake Man’ scored the decisive goal in the Euro 1980 campaign.
Enzo Scifo: Awarded the Golden Shoe and named Belgian Footballer of the Century in 1995.
Marc Wilmots: Forward who played in two World Cups and later became head coach from 2012 to 2016.
Eden Hazard: The captain who led Belgium to third place at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Kevin De Bruyne: The current star player who was named Player of the Year in 2020.
With a rich history, intense rivalries and a long list of football icons, Belgian football remains a source of pride and passion for the entire country.
